Choosing A Powder

Back To When Powder Goes Wrong

Considerations when choosing powder coating.

The Akzo Nobel PZ770 System has been designed to be used in all of the areas detailed below.

The life expectancy of any paint system depends on several factors, some of which are:

Location                                   Paint System

Environment                             Maintenance

LOCATION

The closer to the sea that the component is positioned lowers the life expectancy of your coating. In a rural location where it is exposed to a less aggressive environment it will have a far greater life expectancy.

ENVIRONMENT

Industrial areas with humid and aggressive atmospheres will shorten the life expectancy of coatings.

Unusual long term weather conditions also have a bearing on life expectancy (wettest year on record etc).

PAINT SYSTEM

The paint system i.e. preparation, prime and topcoat can not be underestimated when it comes to coating performance.

This, combined with the quality of materials from the paint supplier, will have a major impact on the life expectancy of your product.

 MAINTENANCE

Powder coating as with any other paint, is not a maintenance free coating. It needs regular cleaning, inspection and repair if damaged. The frequency of this depends on the environment it is located in.

A maintenance manual for the coating should be included in your customer maintenance manual.

The method of repair for damage can be found on the Akzo Nobel PZ 770 Data Sheet

We powder coat to ISO 12944 Wet Paint Standards for C1, C2, C3, C4, C5 and C5-M Environments, using the Akzo Nobel PZ system.

There are no recognized standards for degrease/etch/powder coat, however, all our applied coatings conform to various parts of BS 3900 Methods Of Test For Paint, e.g. film thickness, gloss, bend, impact etc.

Degrease/etch/powder coat is only suitable for a C1 Environment.

A none warranty contract i.e. our normal everyday work, should have a minimum life expectancy of 5 years internal (Degrease/Etch/Powder Coat) in a C1 Environment, and 3 years external (Degrease/Shot blast/PZ 770/Powder Coat) in a C2 Environment, subject to certain conditions and exclusions found in our written warranty.

We can offer topcoat written warranty’s for 10 and 15 years using Interpon D36, in a C2 environment, longer term guarantees may be considered depending on circumstances.

The warranty is for mild steel only, it does not cover aluminium capping, galvanized beading and zintec panels etc, as they can not/are not to be shot blasted.
